It is a young, vibrant and friendly country with a reputation for great weather and outdoor pursuits. It also benefits from a high standard of living and lower costs, making it attractive to foreign students.

General Information

A particular attraction of Australia for students looking to go abroad to study is its recent work permits reforms that means working in the country has become a lot easier, although careful planning and thought is required to be able to take advantage of this.

The Application Process

Application is by individual approach to the institutions you are interested in. Careful consideration of all the programs offered will help to make the lengthy individual admission applications a successful use of your time. The personal statement that accompanies your application is key, as is the demonstration of your academic and broader extra-curricular successes. If you are in any doubts about what you need to include in a strong application, you should take professional advice and guidance.

How much will it cost?

Average tuition fees are about AUS $30,000 per year and average living expenses are about AUS $10,000 per year. There are no standardised fees and they will vary from institution to institution. Postgraduate courses can be more expensive, especially popular advanced programs like MBA courses.

Funding, Scholarships and Loans

Scholarships, grants, and bursaries are available for international students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level from some institutions. The awarding committees will take into account the overall profile of students including your past academic record, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities and other achievements. A carefully constructed application will maximise your chances of being awarded financial assistance. If you’re unsure of what you should include, seek help from someone more experienced.

Students from India can apply for educational loans from state banks for up to Rs.2.5 Million. You may need to provide security of up to 100% of the amount borrowed, and the repayment term will be from will be from 5-7 years. This is a serious financial commitment, so make sure you have made the best decisions about your studies before you proceed.

Student Employment

Australia’s student visa reforms allow students to work after they study in Australia. Students are also permitted to apply for permanent residency depending on their skills and the course they have studied. However, the numbers of job opportunities in Australia are limited as compared to other developed nations.

Permanent Resident

Many international students enjoy their time in Australia so much that they apply for permanent residency so they can continue to live and work in Australia. You can express your interest in applying for permanent residency through the Department of Immigration and Border Protection's SkillSelect migration program, which could lead to permanent residency through a Skilled Independent Visa, the Employer Nomination Scheme or the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme.

After having your skills assessed through a points test (resulting in a points score), you may then be invited to apply for a visa. Those students who do not pass the points test or meet the requirements of SkillSelect may be able to complete further studies or apply for one of the temporary visa options above to stay in Australia and develop their skills.
